Council chief executive's pay rise sparks protest

10:12 pm on 21 December 2011

About 30 protesters gathered inside the foyer of the Christchurch City Council on Wednesday to express their displeasure at a big pay increase for its chief executive.

A slim majority of councillors voted for the $68,000 pay rise for Tony Marryatt, which mayor Bob Parker is defending as necessary to retain his services.

Protest organiser Peter Lynch says the increase is irresponsible, given the financial burden being shouldered by residents following devastating earthquakes in Canterbury.

Mr Lynch says the protest is just the beginning of action to be taken.
