A Rotorua man who shot at police during a car chase across the Bay of Plenty has pleaded guilty to a raft of charges in Tauranga District Court.

James Samuels, 20, was badly injured by a shot fired by a police officer during a stand-off in Waihi, and is now a paraplegic.

During a depositions hearing on Thursday, Samuels admitted a number of firearms related offences, as well as pleading guilty to charges of burglary and stealing a car.

Negotiations between police and his lawyers saw a charge of attempted murder downgraded.

He will appear for sentencing at the High Court in Rotorua in August.
