Two road deaths have been reported to date for the holiday period.
A woman died after her car crashed into a light truck on State Highway 3 south of Waitara in Taranaki shortly after midday on Saturday.
Police say the driver and passenger in the truck were unharmed.
A fatal car crash happened earlier at Waiuku, south of Auckland at 8am on Saturday, when a car hit a tree and the sole occupant was flung out.
The official holiday period began at 4pm on Friday and ends at 6am on 4 January.
