The Ministry of Transport says the official holiday road toll stands at two, although three road fatalities have been reported by emergency services.
The ambulance service in Christchurch says a person is dead after a car hit a pole on New Brighton Road and plunged into the Avon River early on Saturday morning.
In Taranaki, a woman died after her car collided with a light truck on State Highway 3 south of Waitara.
Police say the truck driver and passenger were unhurt.
And in Counties Manakau, the sole occupant of a car was killed on Waiuku Road at about 8am on Saturday morning.
Police say the car appears to have drifted off the road and hit a tree, flinging the driver from the vehicle.
