Police investigating the attack on a five-year-old girl at a camping ground in Turangi are looking through CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses as far afield as Wellington.

The girl was violently assaulted as she and her three-year-old brother slept in a caravan at about 10pm on Wednesday. She suffered severe facial injuries.

Her parents were less than 20 metres away in the kitchen block of the Club Habitat camping ground. The family were on holiday from Europe.

About 20 police staff were working on the investigation on Monday.

Police said the crime scene examination was complete, and they are making good progress on the forensic analysis of that work.

On Sunday, the girl's parents issued an emotional Christmas Day message thanking New Zealanders for their love and support.
