Fire deaths double in a year

8:04 pm on 11 July 2008

The number of people being killed in house fires is at its highest in a decade, with 28 people dying in the year to June - double the number of deaths in the previous year

The Fire Service says it cannot explain the recent spike in deaths, however the increase has prompted it to create a series of television advertisements about the cause and effect of house fires.

It says fires are started by the same basic things: people not paying attention, being drunk in the kitchen, not completely stubbing out cigarettes and children playing with matches.
