Six teenagers have been arrested after a series of car thefts and a high speed chase in Gisborne early on Wednesday.
Police say three Subaru cars were stolen from Gisborne at about 3am.
Officers chased one of the vehicles for a time but had to abandon the pursuit for safety reasons as the car hit speeds of more than 170 kilometres per hour.
They caught up with that car later on and chased the driver through rural roads for nearly an hour before the stolen car's engine developed problems and the driver was forced to stop.
Police recovered the other two stolen cars and arrested the alleged offenders.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott says two 15-year-old girls and four males in their mid to late teens were arrested.
A 19-year-old will appear in court on Thursday, while the five others will appear in youth court next week.
Another Subaru was stolen overnight, but it is not known if that theft is connected with the others.
