Road toll now 11

5:06 pm on 29 December 2011

The Ministry of Transport says the official holiday road toll now stands at 11.

Police say a man was killed in Woolston, Christchurch early on Thursday. He was thrown from his car when it hit a lamp post.

A woman who was wearing a seatbelt, received minor injuries.

On Wednesday, one person was killed in a car crash between Lake Paringa and Lake Moeraki at about 4pm.

The Ministry of Transport says another person in that vehicle has now died, taking the official toll to 11.

The official holiday period began at 4pm on 23 December and ends at 6am on 4 January. Last year, there were 12 fatalities during that period.

Superintendent Paula Rose says the total number of road deaths so far this year is 280, 94 down on the previous year.

She says with New Year approaching, people need to take police warnings very seriously.
