No container recovery

Strong winds and rough seas have brought efforts to recover containers from the Rena to a halt.

Maritime New Zealand says no containers were recovered on Thursday and none will be removed on Friday.

However, work to clear beaches of debris from containers is continuing, with the public warned not to handle any meat they find but to report it.

Maritime NZ says the weather conditions will help break up any oil, but could also bring more oil ashore.

The agency says oil has been reported in the Papamoa and Mount Maunganui beach areas and cleaners will be working in these areas.

One penguin newly covered in oil was picked up on Friday and will be fed and stabilised before being sent to the Wildlife Recovery Centre in Palmerston North.
