ETS mandatory reporting takes effect

9:35 am on 1 January 2012

A number of participants in the Emissions Trading Scheme are now governed by new regulations.

From 1 January, the law requires importers of synthetic gases, landfill operators and the agriculture sector to collect information about their greenhouse gas emissions.

Operators of landfills must collect data on how much methane is produced at their sites.

Importers of synthetic greenhouse gases such as those in refrigeration and air conditioning units are required to monitor how much they import.

The agriculture sector must also begin monitoring emissions to ensure monitoring and reporting systems are working properly by the time they fully enter the scheme in 2015.

The Government says it will work with the sector to find ways to reduce emissions before then.
