Storm watch lifted

5:43 pm on 1 January 2012

MetService has lifted a severe thunderstorm watch for the central North Island, but says showers are still expected.

It says there is a low risk of isolated thunderstorms across the North Island from eastern Taranaki to the Central Plateau to Hastings.

Meanwhile, Bay of Plenty Regional Council says the Waimana river has burst its banks and waters have reached the backyards of several homes.

Several roads are closed in the North Island due to slips or flooding, including State Highway Two at Waimana Gorge.
