Police fear stolen firearms could go to gang members

Police in South Taranaki are concerned that 10 high-powered firearms stolen from a rural property, including shotguns and rifles, will be sold to gang members.

The guns were taken on New Year's Day from a property located on the eastern side of the Pohukura Saddle on Ohura Road.

Sergeant Phil Taikato says while there are no gangs living in the remote area, he still fears the weapons could end up being sold to gang members outside the area.

He says the haul included shotguns and 270, 243 and 22 calibre rifles, some of which are semi-automatic weapons.

The thieves also took a green Daihatsu Terios, which they later abandoned and police are interested in sightings of the vehicle.

Mr Taikato says they are also asking for sightings of a dark blue or black station wagon which was seen parked in the vicinity at the time.
