Police in Northland are lauding the region's lowest road toll on record with just seven road deaths during 2011.
That compares with an average of 34 deaths a year.
The lowest previous toll since records began in 1970 was 22 deaths.
Relieving Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant Steve Dickson attributes the big drop in the number of deaths to education campaigns.
He says engineering improvements, including lower speed limits on some roads, and the use of road barriers and directional arrows on others, have also helped to lower the toll.
