Hard work pays off for Northland road group

Roadsafe Northland says it has worked hard through education campaigns to significantly reduce the region's road toll.

Police are lauding the area's lowest toll on record with just seven road deaths last year. That compares with an average of 34 deaths a year.

The lowest previous toll since records began in 1970 was 22 deaths.

Roadsafe Northland chairperson John Williamson says the group accepted there was a problem in the region and developed a strategy to deal with it, which the community bought into and supported.
