Wellington airport may drop international departure fee

8:45 pm on 5 January 2012

Wellington Airport is proposing removing its departure fee for international passengers.

At present, adult passengers leaving the airport on overseas flights must pay $25 and children $10.

Acting chief executive John Howarth says removing the fee will ensure international travel is competitive and help to promote new routes to the city.

The airport is to discuss the proposal with airlines before a final decision is made in February.

Both Auckland and Christchurch airports have abandoned their international departure fees.
