Two teenagers have been arrested in Auckland after the stolen car they were street racing in hit another vehicle, killing the 22-year-old driver.

The crash happened when the stolen Subaru ran a red light at an intersection in Mt Wellington, just before 3am on Sunday.

Police arrested the 15-year-old driver of the stolen car on Saturday afternoon, charging him with dangerous driving causing death.

He'll appear in the Auckland Youth Court next week.

A 17-year-old man, who was a passenger in the stolen car, has been arrested and charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

Police say more charges could be laid.

They're urging the drivers of a modified silver vehicle, and what's believed to be a green Toyota Corolla, spotted at the scene to come forward.

Police say the dead man's family are deeply distressed and have been offered help from Victim Support.
