Shellfish ban lifted

12:11 pm on 7 January 2012

Canterbury District Health Board has lifted a ban on eating shellfish along much of the coastline around Christchurch.

The ban was put in place because of contamination from bacteria and toxic algae.

However the board says it is now safe to collect shellfish from Amberley to Birdlings Flat, with the exception of the area around the Avon Heathcote Estuary, including Sumner Beach, where the ban remains in place.

Signage will be taken down over the next few days.
