A man killed by a stolen car which ran a red light during a street race in Auckland, was due to take part in a legal street rally several hours after the incident.

Shaun Ryan Fitzpatrick, 22, of Pakuranga, was to participate in the CannonBall Run on Saturday - an annual event in which amateur racers circumnavigate the streets of Auckland.

Event manager Vaughan Philip says race organisers found out about Mr Fitzpatrick's death just before the race began at 9am. He says it's a tragedy.

Two teenagers are under arrest following the incident at an intersection on Carbine Road in Mt Wellington, just before 3am on Saturday.

One, aged 15, is charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The other suspect, aged 17, was a passenger in the same vehicle.

Police say more charges could be laid.

They are also looking for the drivers of two other vehicles seen at the crash site. One car was a modified silver vehicle and the other is believed to be a green Toyota Corolla.
