The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology has approved $785 million in contracts for its 2008 investment round - $157 million more than last year.

The primary production sector will get the biggest boost in funding.

The 96 contestable contracts are with 24 organisations, including Crown research institutes, universities and private companies.

Projects that get funding range across areas from bio-energy and agricultural sustainability to animal welfare and forestry initiatives.
