Recreational fishers this summer can expect to be answering some official questions about where they fish and what they catch.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has commissioned the National Research Bureau to ask about 7000 New Zealanders about what they fish and where.
MAF says it is the biggest recreational survey undertaken in New Zealand.
The ministry says it already has accurate information about how much commercial fishers catch and a reasonable idea of how much is caught under customary take.
So information about what and how much recreational fishers take will help the Minister make decisions about setting of allowable catches.
