Powers-saving effort needs year-round push, says energy group

An energy group says the Government's energy-efficiency body is not doing enough to promote year-round power saving.

The call comes as big electricity users say the threat of a winter crisis has passed and the multi-million-dollar public campaign could be ended this week.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority says it already runs year-round power-saving campaigns.

But the convenor of the Sustainable Energy Forum, Tim Jones, says the authority is too small and too far down the "food chain of government" to have real influence.

Mr Jones says the authority focuses too much on improving the efficiency of appliances and not enough on conservation.

The Major Electricity Users Group says the threat of a power crisis this winter has passed. Power consumption fell 4.4% as at Thursday of last week.

However, most electricity companies and the Electricity Commission say Transpower should not be in any hurry to end the campaign.
