Some Nelson and Tasman property owners with landslip and flood damage from December's record rainfall may face a wait of more than six months before they can return to their homes.
The Earthquake Commission is dealing with 720 flood or landslip-related claims from December's 1-in-100-year downpour across Nelson and Tasman.
EQC inspectors and engineers have this week begun visiting hundreds of properties from Nelson city to Golden Bay.
Commission spokesperson Barry Searle says geotech engineers have been brought in from around the country and all properties should be assessed by the end of next week.
EQC is aiming to settle most claims and settlements within six months although repairs could take longer.
Mr Searle says that, where slips affect adjoining properties, settlements could also take more than six months to complete.
