Two people have been rescued at the Patea river mouth in Taranaki after getting into trouble while boating.

Police say a boat flipped in heavy surf and the men fell out about 2pm on Wednesday.

A helicopter winched one man to safety, while the other was plucked out of the water by a rescue boat.

St John Ambulance says one person is in a serious condition and the other is in a moderate condition.
