Auckland police have identified the body of a man hit by a car whose driver claims he was already lying on the road.
The man was found on Mt Eden Road about 2.45am on Thursday.
Police say the man, who was in his 30s, died of head injuries and has been identified by his fingerprints.
Detective Sergeant Pete Steward says the possibility that a second car may have been involved has not been ruled out.
