David Ferrer will defend his title against Olivier Rochus in the Heineken Open tennis final.

It was a hectic day on Friday as organisers of the Auckland tournament made up for lost time after rain disrupted matches on Thursday.

Third seed Fernando Verdasco from Spain finished off his quarterfinal, easing past doubles partner Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5 6-4 and into the semifinal against countryman Ferrer, who needed three sets to beat Alejandro Falla from Colombia 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Rochus also took three sets to see off former champion Phillip Kohlschreiber in the first semi.

The German won the first set in a tiebreak - then lost his way and seven straight games before waking up in the third set.

But while Kohlschreiber saved three match points, the diminutive Belgian closed it out 6-7 6-1 6-4.

Ferrer took centre court again in blazing late afternoon sunshine and wasted no time, the top seed booking his third final without facing a break point, easily beating Verdasco 6-3 6-4.

The final will be played on centre court on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand doubles pairing of Dan King-Turner and Michael Venus upset the fourth seeds to advance to the semifinals.

They beat Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and German Christopher Kas in straight sets 7-5 7-6.
