Importers switching to Tauranga

5:36 am on 14 January 2012

The Importers Institute says some members are moving their import business to the Port of Tauranga because of continued industrial action at Ports of Auckland.

Maritime Union workers have held five strikes this summer and the port has lost two major customers - Fonterra and Maersk Shipping.

The institute says the cost of using both ports is roughly the same. But businesses are preferring the certainty of a two to three day shipping delay through Tauranga over the unsettled route through Auckland.
