Underestimation of conditions blamed for drownings

Water safety officials say poor planning and underestimating the conditions are to blame for two drownings at the weekend.

Surf Lifesaving New Zealand says people too often fail to check weather forecasts, the tides and how big the surf swell is, and they end up being caught.

Water Safety New Zealand says schools are focusing less on swimming lessons nowadays, meaning many young people fail to develop the skills needed to cope in the open water.
