Police believe man fell into drain trying to get keys

Police say a man whose body was found in a storm water drain in Wellington appears to have died accidentally.

They say Peter Black from Johnsonville had not suffered any major trauma or injuries.

The 43-year-old's body was found on Sunday afternoon in a drain in a car park near the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Inspector Paul Basham, says it appears Mr Black climbed into the drain about 6am on Saturday to find his car keys and then could not get back out.

Mr Basham says after a thorough investigation of the scene, including talking to witnesses and looking at CCTV images, it seems that Mr Black's death was accidental.

The keys were later found in the drain.
