Strike at Auckland port called off

1:45 pm on 19 January 2012

The Maritime Union has called off a strike planned for the end of this month.

The cancellation of the 24-hour strike comes after Ports of Auckland told the union it will allow all union members involved in the industrial dispute to attend a stop work meeting.

Union president Gary Parsloe says staff and port representatives will meet on Friday where the union will be briefed on how the company intends to contract out work.

He says further strike action could still be possible, depending on members' reaction to the briefing.

The stopwork meeting takes place on 31 January.
