A car has crashed through the window of the department store Kirkcaldie and Stains in central Wellington.

Police say the car carrying a mother and daughter from the Kapiti Coast smashed through the shop window on Brandon Street as the driver tried to park in a disabled carpark about 3pm on Friday.

A staff member standing on the footpath was hit by the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to Wellington Hospital with minor injuries.

Staff were standing behind the window in part of the make-up section at the time of the incident.

One member, Rod Spencer, says it is not the first time something like this has happened, and although staff got a fright they are otherwise okay.

Acting Senior Sergeant Andy Gilbert says the 98-year-old mother and her daughter are shaken after the incident and embarrassed by all the attention.
