Inquiry after prisoner escapes from police station

Police in Napier are investigating how a recaptured prisoner managed to escape again from their custody.

Jayden Conroy took off from the Napier Central Station on Thursday, a day after being re-caught following his escape from a work party at Rangipo Prison, near Turangi, on Saturday.

Inspector Kevin Klaff says Conroy had just appeared in court and was about to be transferred back to jail.

Mr Klaff says the prisoner escaped through a side door that was thought to be locked.

"It's certainly something that we would rather not have happened. It is a security lapse and we will be looking into it," he says.
