Man in custody following police standoff

6:37 am on 19 July 2008

A man is in custody after a standoff with police in Masterton, during which a baby was held.

The incident began at midday at the Rose Gardens on High Street and was defused just after 3pm.

The 24-year-old man, who is believed to be the father of the baby, has been taken into police custody.

Police say the man is believed to be suicidal and have had previous dealings with him.

They say the standoff escalated following a domestic incident on Friday involving the man.

Team leader of Wellington Police communications Kirsty Macdonald says police had cordoned off the section of the street between Vivian and Fleet streets and traffic was diverted. Police dog handlers in Wellington are also at the scene.

The baby was unharmed.
