Firefighters get to grips with pine plantation blaze

9:10 pm on 21 January 2012

The Fire Service says a large fire in Selwyn District, west of Christchurch, has been brought under control.

Crews had battled the blaze, which was over a square kilometre of a cleared pine plantation, for several hours. Strong winds fanned the flames.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire at Ardlui Road, south of Hororata, just after 3pm on Saturday.

Ten appliances and a helicopter were tackling it.

No homes were affected but a fireman sustained a minor injury.
