Man in court over Chinese girl's abduction

6:39 am on 19 July 2008

A Chinese national will appear in court on Saturday charged with assault in connection with the abduction of a five-year-old girl.

Cina Ma was returned to her family on Friday, four days after being snatched from outside her Harrowglen home on Auckland's North Shore.

She was found at an unspecified North Shore house at 3.15pm on Friday. The child is said to be very upset, but physically fine.

Police will not say where she was found, but there are cordons in place at two partially built houses near the Ma family home.

Further serious charges are expected to be laid against the 25-year-old man and police say other arrests could be made.

Police had refused to release much information during their inquiry because of fears over Cina Ma's personal safety. However, they always believed she was in New Zealand and unharmed.
