Police have begun a homicide inquiry after a man was found dead in a Rotorua park early on Tuesday.
The body was discovered by members of the public in Kuirau Park just before 1.30am.
Detective Inspector Mark Loper says the man is Pakeha in his 60s and suffered serious injuries to the head and body.
Mr Loper says it is believed the man had moved temporarily to Rotorua, but a post-mortem to be conducted on Wednesday will be able to confirm his identity.
The body has been removed from the park on Tuesday afternoon and the police cordon will be mostly lifted by Wednesday at the latest.
