Children unrestrained while breastfed in cars

Police have caught three mothers breastfeeding in cars on motorways around Auckland.

The trio were spotted as part of a 10-day education campaign about child restraints in the wake of a string of fatal crashes involving children.

Investigators say they are shocked, as the children would have been thrown from the car in a serious crash.

Officers also found several cars with children sitting in the footwells or boot.

They say children should always be securely belted with a proper car seat and should stay in the back seat of the car until they are at least 10 years old.
