Firefighters are battling a blaze on a forestry block just north of Te Kao in Northland, about 45km from Cape Reinga.
Northern principal rural fire officer Myles Taylor says the fire broke out just before 6pm but about 80% of the blaze has been contained by 10pm.
Mr Taylor says two helicopters have been working to dampen the remaining fire.
About 20 hectares of what Mr Taylor calls cutover forest has been burnt.
