Adventure athlete Steve Gurney of Christchurch has been offered diversion, after pleading guilty to careless use of a motor vehicle.
The nine-time winner of the Coast to Coast was driving his car over a rural railway crossing in Rangiora when he collided with a passenger train in September. He was not seriously injured.
In November, Gurney sent a guilty plea, in the form of a letter, along with several recommendations about how train crossings can be made safer.
Sergeant Colin Stewart told Radio New Zealand that Gurney has since been offered diversion.
Gurney was due to appear in court on Wednesday, but the case is adjourned for two weeks while he considers the offer.
