Flight of the Conchords comedian Bret McKenzie has been nominated for an Oscar for his song Man or Muppet, which features in the film The Muppets.
Only two songs have been nominated in the category; the other is Real in Rio, from the animated film Rio.
McKenzie's song is considered the favourite to get the Oscar.
He told Checkpoint he was "very hopeful" his song might get the final nod since it was on the list of 39 songs nominated for the Oscars and had been successful in the awards leading up to this: "But you can never be sure."
He says Man or Muppet is his favourite song in the movie.
McKenzie is the second New Zealander nominated in the Oscar best song category. Fran Walsh won for co-writing the Lord of the Rings song Into the West, in 2004.
