Quakes in Kermadecs

A series of six earthquakes measuring between magnitude 5.0 and 5.8 has struck the Kermadec Islands.

The United States Geological Survey says the quakes were at depths of between 15km - 36km.

The first and biggest, at magnitude 5.8 occurred around 5.45pm on Sunday.

Five more quakes followed, the latest magnitude 5.0 at 8pm.

The islands are about 1000km northeast of New Zealand.
