Work of radiologist audited

Northland District Health Board is auditing the work of a radiologist who worked at Whangarei hospital, after Southern DHB raised concerns about his work.

Northland DHB chief medical officer Michael Roberts, says the man was employed at Whangarei Hospital between October 2010 and March last year.

Dr Roberts says Whangarei hospital has already looked at 750 reports from the last two months the radiologist worked in Northland and is continuing to work back through previous reports.

He says so far the audit has shown that the radiologist's work was of the same high standard as his colleagues.

Southern DHB says the radiologist worked at Southland Hospital as a locum radiologist for less than three weeks in December 2011, reporting on CT, MRI and ultrasound scans.

Its chief medical officer, David Tulloch, says consultants using his reports to decide on treatment for their patients discovered the mistakes.

An immediate audit of the reports confirmed an unacceptable rate of error and the man was stood down from duty.

Dr Tulloch says, however, no changes were needed to treatment plans as a result.

According to Southern DHB, the man is no longer working in New Zealand.
