Firefighters have brought three fires in a forestry block near Castlepoint in Wairarapa under control after battling them in high winds since 4am.
Senior fire fighter Murray Pike says three separate pockets within the same area of pine forest caught fire.
Fallen power lines are thought to have caused the fires, but that's yet to be confirmed.
Mr Pike says winds gusting up to 130km per hour have died back, allowing fire fighters to get control of the fire.
He says it is testament to excellent fire-fighting work that although eight hectares were damaged, only the grass has burnt and the trees themselves have remained largely undamaged.
Helicopters remain on standby in case they are needed and fire fighters will monitor hotspots for several days.
