Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron has bought a farm in Wairarapa.

The sale is among applications approved by the Overseas Investment Office last month.

James F Cameron, of Canada, was given consent to buy a 250-hectare farm on Western Lake Road, in southern Wairarapa.

The OIO says Mr Cameron and his family intend to reside indefinitely in New Zealand and are buying the property to live on and operate as a working farm.

However, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says other families have missed out because of overseas competition and it's not an investment, but a takeover.
