Fishing vessel to be inspected

7:50 am on 29 July 2008

A fishing boat which grounded off the Bay of Plenty on Sunday, killing two fishermen, is to be checked for fuel leaks.

San Cuvier skipper, Rick Josephs, 38, and a crew member, Damien Wyatt, 35, died after the boat hit rocks during stormy weather near Opotiki.

Sanford Limited managing director, Eric Barrett, says the boat will be inspected on Tuesday morning and fuel removed.

Mr Barrett says he doesn't know yet whether the vessel will be salvaged or how it will be removed from its current position.

The 18-metre hit rocks at Haurere Point, 10km east of Opotiki, about 3.30am on Sunday. The boat had been sheltering overnight.

The two surviving crew members were taken to Whakatane Hospital.
