A Wellington transport company has been fined $30,000 after an accident in which a self-employed contractor was lucky to survive being crushed by a concrete panel.

Rough Terrain Transport Ltd was also ordered to pay $20,000 in reparation to the contractor who broke his right shoulder and both legs and ankles in the accident in March last year.

The Porirua District Court was told an employee from Rough Terrain was asked to transport two concrete panels using a process that he had never performed before and for which he was not trained.

One panel was connected to the crane, but the other weighing two-and-a-half-tonnes was unsecured and fell on the man.
