Maori flag to be flown in capital on Waitangi Day

Updated at 12:03 pm on 4 February 2012

The national Maori flag, the Tino Rangatiratanga, is to be flown for the first time from Wellington's Town Hall on Waitangi Day.

The flag was unveiled by the group Te Kawariki on Waitangi Day, 6 January, in 1990.

In 2009, the Government recognised the Tino Rangatiratanga as the preferred national Maori flag.

Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown says it will be good to have the Tino Rangatiratanga and the official New Zealand flag flown together in a sign of respect and nationhood.

Meanwhile, an Auckland Council spokesperson says the Maori flag will be flying in Aotea Square.
