Pharmac to review Herceptin decision

9:24 pm on 30 July 2008

Government drug-buying agency Pharmac will reconsider on Wednesday how it funds the breast cancer drug Herceptin after being ordered earlier in the year by the High Court to review the matter.

The agency was also ordered to consult over a decision two years ago not to approve a 12-month course of the drug.

It is funding a nine-week treatment plan for women with early aggressive breast cancer, but many patients and doctors believe it should be funding a year-long treatment.

The agency has received 319 submissions on the issue.

Board members will consider the issue again at a meeting on Wednesday. Their decision is not expected to be made public until next week.

National says the Government should give district health boards the extra money they need to fund a 12-month treatment.

The party's associate health spokesperson, Jackie Blue, says a National government would find the money to extend treatment with Herceptin.

Dr Blue says the supplier of Herceptin, Roche, has slashed the cost of the drug under a longer treatment plan.
