Watch on rivers

8:25 am on 30 July 2008

The Waikato Regional Council is monitoring rivers on the Coromandel following heavy rain.

The Ohinemuri and Kauaeranga Rivers are running high after about 250mm of rain in the catchment in the last 24 hours.

The regional council says nearly half a metre of rain has fallen in the hills since Saturday and the ground is saturated.

Despite this, the council says there are no problems with rivers and streams across the wider region.

The road just south of Whitianga is flooded and State Highway Two through the Karangahake Gorge is impassable due to flooding.
