A prisoner attacked at Rimutaka Prison by another inmate is fighting for his life in Wellington Hospital.
Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating after the attack in the prison's faith based unit on Sunday afternoon.
Wellington Hospital says the man has serious head injuries and his condition has deteriorated.
He is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.
