Police say they were hit by a southbound passenger train at Tawa on the Kapiti line at about 5.10pm.
KiwiRail says the Kapiti Line has been shut down while emergency services attend the scene and buses are being used to reduce disruption.
There is no information on the age or gender of the victim.
